Ways to Keep Safe While Abroad

Being a solo female traveler is exhilarating and fun. There’s a certain freedom to it where you’re able to get up when you want, go where you want, experience what you want and have a lot of fun in the process. Unfortunately, we do live in a sexist and patriarchal world and that shows up worldwide, not just in certain countries. As such, you must know how you’re being perceived and be aware of your surroundings. There are certain ways that I’ve learned over the years allows me to feel safe while traveling solo.

Pair Up with Other Solo Travelers

When it even appears that you’re with other travelers while abroad, people think twice about approaching you with bullshit. You’re already in a protective social circle and when people don’t see you as a loner waiting to be preyed on and as someone that has people looking out for them. That’s the biggest deterrent to predators.

Take a Booked Tour Through an Accredited Travel Site

By booking a tour, you’re somewhat under the protection of the tour guide and your surrounded by other people that are on the tour as well. You already have an itinerary laid out so you can email this to your loved ones who can keep track of you when abroad. Booking a tour is documented proof of where you plan on going while abroad along with other travelers that are coming along with you for the journey.

Keep Your Wits and Use Your Mind

Sometimes, you must outsmart predators. I’ve had men follow me with the desire to rob me. I’ve had men who were approaching me and smooth-talking me with the hopes of getting money out of me. You must know what’s up and why people are coming in your direction and then know how to respond to that. Outsmarting the person will be your best bet.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Pay attention to who you’re around while you’re out and about. It’s important to do that because if you don’t pay attention, then you can get got. Just making note of the stores that around you, who’s staying around you, tapping in with the locals. All these things help so that when you are going somewhere or coming back to where you stay, you notice when something or someone is out of place. Once you notice something is off, you can address it properly.

Take What Protection You Can

I’ve managed to get my taser abroad in my checked luggage. It just makes me feel better to know that I have it. Danger exists everywhere and having protection can make all the difference in the world. Protection is different for everyone, and one shouldn’t break any laws when entering a country, but if you can protect yourself legally, always do your research and do so.
