There’s so many annoying things that happen when traveling. It’s par for the course and can happen at any time but at the end of the day it doesn’t make the situation any more pleasant.

Going through TSA and having your items taken or thrown away

It’s annoying because you spend money on these items and they can be very casual and heartless about throwing them away. The other issue is that sometimes, I don’t believe they throw the items away. Sometimes, I believe they keep the items which is insulting and little more than theft. It also can feel humiliating to have all your shit check out in front of other people. It’s a hassle but once you get to the other side of that gate, it does feel like freedom and adventure can begin. Still though…

Being a walking lick while vacationing and having people constantly try to sell you stuff or get something out of you

Sometimes in developing countries, when you’re an American, you’re a walking lick. There’s someone trying to finesse you every time you step out of the door which gets to be extremely annoying, and it comes to the point where you start flat out ignoring people, even though you’d rather show respect. Having people do the most trying to finesse you can take a toll. Even recently, I had the staff of a hostel that I was staying in try to hike up the prices of bikes simply because they felt like I had it. The good thing about countries like this is that many people are often selling the same products, so they have a lot of competition. If you don’t like what they’re offering at one spot, you’re able to walk away and just get a better price at a different spot.

Overzealous security at a spot or night out

Sometimes, people can be on a power trip in certain locations and that can be annoying especially if there’s a weird us-versus-you mentality. I don’t like that. Remove stat.

Having to negotiate prices while abroad

Prices in America are usually fixed so having the skill of negotiation for me is limited.  It’s a great skill to have and I’d like to master it one day but you have to know where to start, how to offer lower than what you really want and getting them to talk up to the price that you’re actually ok with paying, you have to know the worth or value of something, and you have to be quick on the draw. The only art of this skill that I’ve mastered is walking away (which works surprisingly).

Dealing with men

It can be a bit much to deal with men while abroad, but it should never stop one from having a good time.
